The Class of 2029 is coming to SOAR High School! On Friday, March 21st, these students found out via email if they were accepted to the competitive SOAR High School. With over 500 applicants to both the Lancaster and Palmdale locations, it was quite a feat to get accepted. So consider this your welcome and guidebook to all things SOAR.
First off, meet some of your classmates, Kathryn Jefferson and SeaJae Marquez.
SOAR Prep Academy Kathryn Jefferson, whose older sister Juliet attends SOAR Lancaster, has known about SOAR for her entire life because her mom, Mrs. Jefferson, began teaching there when she was one.
Now, as a future STAR, Kathryn said she likes the idea of integrating high school life with college life.
“I think it’s neat how I can experience both at the same time. I like how close the campus is and how it would help build community as well,” she said, adding, “I can’t wait to experience all the opportunities it has to offer.”
SeaJae didn’t attend SOAR Prep but came from Joe Walker High School and is equally excited for next year. “I was interested in the opportunities and the change from normal school environments. I wanted something new that also focused more on academics, but also had activities.” SeaJae wants to work in a different environment that will further enrich her academic journey.
Moving on, let's talk about your experience at SOAR! Your next steps in this exciting adventure will be receiving your high school schedule and picking your college classes. As many of you know, you will take college courses simultaneously with your high school classes. This means that you will only have four to five high school classes your freshman year, out of our seven class periods. These breaks in your day are dedicated to taking college courses or completing your homework. Make sure that you aren’t just relaxing during this time; it is a built-in part of your school day for work!
Speaking of studying, you may be wondering where the best places to study on campus are. For this, you definitely want to get familiar with the lingo of “going to T500A.” This is a dedicated study, hangout, and relaxing room at SOAR. Stressed from a long day? Cramming for a test? Need study materials? Visit T500A to satisfy all your needs. Some other great options include the AVC computer labs, the AVC library, and the Uhazy study room. AVC offers multiple areas to study that are comfortable and quiet. In fact, within the AVC library, you can reserve study rooms for yourself or your friends, which are perfect for a quick individual study sesh or a group study. The Uhazy study room has many different study areas that are perfect for every one of your needs. With access to all that AVC has to offer, you just have to find what environment works for you!
With all that studying, you are certain to get hungry! SOAR has many food options during the school day: school lunch, the cafe, and Subway. Starting off with the most basic, but the cheapest, school lunch. Every student has access to free breakfast and lunch, which can be picked up at the SOAR campus. This consists of your average school lunch rotations (pizza, salad, chicken sandwiches, mozzarella sticks, burgers). However, it doesn’t stop there, as AVC also has a cafeteria, which is very popular amongst SOAR students. The cafeteria serves food for both breakfast and lunch as well. For breakfast, they serve pastries, breakfast burritos, pancakes, french toast, hash browns, etc. Moving on to lunch, they serve their SOAR famous fries for only 2 dollars! You will most definitely see students eating these fries during all hours of the day. However, for more nutrition, you can expect hamburgers, chicken strips, salads, sandwiches, and different daily specials. The best part about the AVC cafeteria? It is all for a very low cost. Finally, it would be wrong to welcome you to SOAR without highlighting the Subway that is on campus. AVC has a fully functional Subway that serves everything that any normal location would. Beyond the sandwiches, you can find their foot-long treats! In the end, there are so many options, even beyond these three, that you are sure to find something you love.
Alright, we hope you feel welcomed to SOAR High School and have the best four years of your life here. Make sure to enjoy every moment, and attend the school dances, fundraisers, and events. Keep a social life and don’t dedicate every single moment of your life to school, even if it’s tough. In fact, senior Mariah Crocker says, “My advice to you is to enjoy your time and not focus on the clock. Just let it pass naturally and make the most of every moment.” We are so proud of you and can not wait to welcome you to our school!
