The end of the 2024 election season marks the beginning of newly appointed leadership and a new $398 million bond for the Antelope Valley Union High School District.
L. Rosemary Mann replaces longtime board member Jill McGrady in Trustee Area 2. She defeated challengers Laura Giles and Robert Dennis Lundergan. She received 9,911 votes or 45.30 percent of the vote compared to Giles’ 6,465 votes or 29.55 percent of the vote and Lundergan’s 5,505 or 25.16 percent of the vote.
Mann, who was endorsed by the Antelope Valley Teachers Association, is a current Lancaster School District trustee and, according to her facebook account, is a local business owner. She will be sworn in at the board’s December meeting.
In a boon for the high school district, voters overwhelmingly approved a $398 million board to “improve local high schools by upgrading vocational classrooms/labs/technology for skilled trades, science, engineering, math, aerospace education, practical careers skills; fix deteriorating gas/sewer lines, leaky roofs, ensure safe drinking water, upgrade student/school safety; and attract/retain quality teachers.”
The bond received 74,229 votes or 63.33 percent of the vote compared to 42,977, or 36.67 percent, votes against it. The bond will levy 2 cents per $100 assessed value, raising $25,000,000 annually.
