SOAR High School Named National Blue Ribbon School

By Staff Reports

SOAR High School has been honored with the prestigious National Blue Ribbon School award for 2024, a recognition that celebrates outstanding academic achievement and exceptional progress in closing performance gaps among student subgroups.

This accolade, awarded by the U.S. Department of Education, is given to schools across the country that demonstrate overall academic excellence or significant improvement in student performance. SOAR High School, located on the Antelope Valley College campus, is known for its unique program that blends high school and college education, allowing students to earn college credits while completing their high school diplomas.

Principal Wendi Johnston expressed immense pride in the achievement, crediting the school’s success to the collaborative efforts of students, teachers, and staff. “As a community, we have worked hard to create a supportive and challenging learning environment, and this recognition is a testament to the dedication of our faculty, staff, students and families."

SOAR (Students on the Academic Rise) High School has long been recognized for its rigorous academic environment and its focus on preparing students for higher education and careers in STEM fields. By providing students with an opportunity to earn an associate degree while still in high school, the school stands out as a model for academic innovation.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Corona commended SOAR High School and other recipients during the announcement. "The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are proof that excellence in education is achievable and that outstanding teaching can empower students to reach their full potential," the Secretary said in a statement.

The award ceremony will take place in Washington, D.C., later this year, where school leaders will be formally recognized. As a Blue Ribbon School, SOAR High School joins an elite group of institutions across the nation that have demonstrated excellence in educating students and preparing them for lifelong success.

This award is not only a testament to SOAR High School’s commitment to educational excellence but also a reflection of the hard work of its students and staff, whose dedication continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in education.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program was founded in 1982 by the U.S. Department of Education. It recognizes public and private schools that achieve high learning standards or make notable improvements in closing achievement gaps. This honor has been awarded to over 9,000 schools since its inception.

This recognition adds to the accolades for SOAR High School and reinforces its commitment to academic excellence and innovation in education.
