After several reports on stolen scooters and bikes, administrators have asked students to keep their bikes inside SOAR to ensure their safety. Bikes are one of the most common ways of transportation for students, and having their bikes stolen could be devastating for their education, as it would impair their ability to attend classes. The theft of bikes not only affects students' education, but it is also a loss of money, as bikes can be pricey.
Students became aware of the bike thefts through a post on the SOAR STARS Google Classroom. The post only stated that bikes were being stolen and asked students to leave their bikes inside SOAR to ensure no SOAR students had their property stolen. Ana Che, a student affected by these thefts, states, “ It’s kind of annoying because the bike racks here SOAR are smaller, so the bikes are crammed.”
Bike safety is important because many students rely on bikes for transportation, as well as the money lost on a stolen bike can not be easily replaced, which can be discouraging for students. Keeping bikes on SOAR helps protect everyone's property. Another student, Levi Green, states, “I'm scared for the safety of my skateboard, because if they steal bikes, they could steal skateboards too.”
Moving forward, some long-term solutions can be security cameras or more secure bike racks. Encouraging students to invest in better locks and registering their bikes can help ensure the safety of their bikes. The new policy may be inconvenient, but it is a step forward in keeping students' bikes and their peace of mind safe.
