The Countdown to Halloween Begins

Finally, after a long wait, Halloween is right around the corner! As Halloween creeps closer, excitement starts to build. Stores start to release their Halloween decorations, costumes go up on the shelves, and limited edition candy is up for grabs. People begin to prepare for the holiday and discuss their plans for costumes and outings. In no time we’ll see trick-or-treaters filling the sidewalks and carved pumpkins lighting up porches.
Several of our students at SOAR are planning their costumes for the spooky holiday. Halloween is the perfect opportunity to showcase creativity, with several people planning and even making their own costumes! Senior Anayelli Sanchez says, “I was thinking of dressing up as a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader.” Some friends like to participate in duo costumes such as Cosmo and Wanda or trio costumes like Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Halloween isn’t just about costumes, however. There are countless other on-theme activities to participate in. For example, Journalism is hosting the Haunted House at SOAR, where attendees will have the opportunity to walk through rooms filled with chilling surprises as well as play games and compete for prizes! In addition, some fun ideas to celebrate with your friends include going to the pumpkin patch, pumpkin carving, cookie decorating, going to Halloween parties, trick-or-treating, and creepy movie marathons. Freshman Kayliena Cordowin says, “Sometimes we’ll take photos or throw a party and go trick-or-treating.” She adds, “We also enjoy pumpkin carving!”
Apart from trick-or-treating, where children dress up as their favorite characters going door to door to fill their baskets with loads of candy, pumpkin carving is one of the most famous Halloween traditions. People love to show off their artistic side with this activity, whether it’s with the classic jack-o’-lantern or a more intricate design. Adding to “artistic,” makeup gurus show off their skills with impressive face paint and realistic makeup. Many like to create fake gashes with blood and scars to really play their part.
With so many different ways to celebrate Halloween, there is an activity for everyone. Whether you pick to get together and watch scary movies, go trick-or-treating, carve pumpkins, or decorate creepy-looking cookies, Halloween is your chance to have fun and show off your creativity!
