Are you interested in promoting safety, confidence, and self-care amongst your peers? Girls SOAR High meets on Wednesdays during lunch in S-6 to work on projects supporting and empowering female and nonbinary students.
Girls SOAR High, our school’s team of Girls Build, was founded in 2019 by officers Rocio Rivera, Michelle Medina, Jocelyn Cordero, Iliana Tauvar, and Zenaat Abass. They sought to help their peers tackle the unique challenges of being youth on a college campus by promoting self-confidence, safety, awareness upon entering the real world, and self-care. With the help of their advisor, Ms. Justice, they have engaged in many projects centered around civic engagement, STEM, health, and wellness. They worked on creating the Wellness Corner in T-500A stocked with hygiene products for everyone at school! Their two-year project has helped destigmatize hygiene products, and their recent restocking has increased the number of commodities they can provide.
This year, Girls SOAR High is reaching new heights with their officers: President Karina Rosales, Vice-President Emily Ilene Martinez, Secretary Chanel Worley, Treasurer Yamina Bentaalla, and Parliamentarian Leilani Martinez Abarca. Through student-to-student connections, they are working to build an increasingly supportive environment for everyone. Club President Rosales advised all students interested to “Keep an eye on our upcoming events, including a discussion panel with girls of high officer positions at SOAR and a citizen’s project where we’ll identify how informed our student population is on their rights.” Member Jade May enthusiastically shared, “What I love about Girls SOAR High is that I feel comfortable by simply being there, with everyone respecting one another. We’ve brainstormed ideas on how we can help our community and I think that this year’s service project is great, as it’ll help not only myself mentally but also the community. It’s helped me increase my relationships with friends as well!”
Make sure to look out for the next issue!
