Are you searching to enhance your college application or to be privy to select tuition scholarships across the state? Members of the California Scholarship Federation earn just that, meeting on the first Thursday of each month to work on service projects benefiting their community.

SOAR’s CSF chapter was established with the objective of recognizing and encouraging community service and academic achievement. The club is led by President Mariah Valadez and advisor Ms. Graves. Applications are open to sophomores in their second semester unless you were a part of your middle school’s CJSF. Ms. Graves expressed, “I would encourage students with As and Bs to join CSF. You can report it on your college applications and after four semesters of membership you can graduate in gold.” This semester, applications are due on Friday, February 14. However, a grade of D or F in any course, even if it is from AVC or a course not listed in the CSF Course List, will disqualify you from membership. Once approved, you will receive an email from Ms. Graves announcing your acceptance.

Applications must be submitted each semester, and those accepted must pay $5 dues. In CSF, students will have access to exclusive scholarship and community service opportunities; this organization will allow students to research these topics as a club. However, attending the meetings, completing scholarships, and community service beyond SOAR’s established 10 hours are optional, albeit they are rewarding.

One of the many perks of CSF membership is the Life Member or Sealbearer status. In order to achieve this status, students must be a part of the club for four semesters; membership must go from the second semester of sophomore year to the second semester of senior year, since at least one semester has to include senior grades. As a reward, these individuals can “Graduate in Gold,” or don a gold gown on the day of their graduation. In addition, they have the privilege of engaging in fun excursions. Ms. Graves shared, “This past semester was the first trip as a club [to UCLA], since with Covid, we weren’t able to travel. Although, we hope to make these kinds of trips every semester. That is the goal.”

Are you interested in contributing to their efforts? Members of the California Scholarship Federation are organizing a Teddy Bear Drive from January 21st through January 31st. Every stuffed animal will be sent to the Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC) for their Forensic Unit. This unit treats and assists victims of assault from ages 3 months to 90 years old. The plushies will go to those who have been assaulted in order to provide them with comfort and assist them in healing. The bears must be new and no longer than 12 inches. If you wish to participate, you can drop off the bears in Mrs. Jefferson’s room (T600-E).

The California Scholarship Federation is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your academic prowess and abilities. Members can look forward to contributing to core locations in their community and strengthening their college applications. From trips to colleges to “Graduating in Gold,” the opportunities for marvelous memories are endless. Remember, applications are due February 14th!
